Spring into Action: Crawl Space Cleaning Tips

The days are getting longer – and warmer – signaling the annual arrival of spring. For homeowners, that usually means embarking on traditional spring-cleaning rituals. While scrubbing floors, wiping down windows and tidying up closets are essential tasks, it is equally important not to overlook less visible areas of the home, such as your crawl space. Neglecting this area can lead to a host of issues, including moisture problems, structural damage and pest infestations.

Here's a checklist for how to clean your crawl space for the spring season:

  • Inspect for Damage: Check the crawl space for any signs of damage caused by winter weather. Look for cracks in the foundation, gaps in insulation, or water stains. Addressing these issues early can prevent further damage and ensure a dry and healthy environment.

  • Clean and Declutter: Remove any debris or clutter that may have accumulated in the crawl space over the winter months. A clutter-free crawl space is easier to maintain and less inviting to unwanted critters.

  • Maintain Ventilation: Clear away any leaves and branches from crawl space vents, and make sure the vents are open and functioning correctly. Consider installing a dehumidifier or ventilation fan if humidity levels are consistently high.

  • Check for Moisture: Check for signs of moisture, such as dampness or puddles of water, which can lead to mold growth and structural damage. If moisture is present, identify and address the source. Solutions may require installing a vapor barrier, improving drainage and repairing leaks.

  • Monitor Humidity Levels: If you have a dehumidifier, check the air filter and clean or replace it depending on the type of filter. Also, measure your humidity levels with an RH monitor.

  • Inspect Insulation: Inspect the insulation for damage or signs of deterioration. Replace any damaged insulation and consider adding more, if necessary, to improve energy efficiency and maintain comfortable temperatures inside your home.

  • Seal Gaps and Cracks: Fill gaps and cracks with caulk or expanding foam to prevent air leaks and keep unwanted visitors out. Pay attention to areas where pipes, wires, and vents enter the crawl space.

  • Prevent Pests: Take proactive measures to prevent pest infestations by sealing entry points, removing food sources, and considering professional pest control treatments if necessary.

  • Schedule Professional Inspection: If you are unsure about the condition of your crawl space or if you suspect any issues, consider scheduling a professional inspection. A qualified inspector can identify potential problems and recommend appropriate solutions to keep your crawl space in top condition.

Many of these tips are DIY-friendly and perfectly appropriate for the homeowner with little know-how and initiative. All you need is the following protective gear – knee pads, eye protection, headlamp or flashlight, gloves, closed-toe shoes, and possibly a facemask. We have, however, noticed a few DIY crawl space missteps, such as installing an underpowered or inadequate dehumidifier or improperly installing French drains using the wrong materials and poor workmanship. Project mishaps like these can cause more harm than good and should be left to the professionals.

Take time to spring clean your crawl space to ensure a dry and healthy environment for your home. Regular maintenance and attention to detail will help prevent costly repairs later and ensure your crawl space remains functional for years to come. As always, please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help.
